Lorain man convicted of murder in beating death

Anthony Sandoval, 38,  was found guilty today of murder and felonious assault in the July 16, 2006, beating death of David Conti.

County Common Pleas Judge James Burge said Sandoval’s defense attorneys failed to prove that Conti was responsible for the rage that Sandoval had built up that led to him attacking Conti as he walked Sandoval’s girlfriend from a Lorain bar to her car.

Assistant County Prosecutor Laura Swansinger said in her closing argument that Conti had no idea that his simple act of kindness would lead to his death.

“When David Conti offered to walk Debra Sturgeon to her car he was just being a gentleman,” she said.

Sandoval is set to be scheduled Thursday. He will receive a mandatory 15 years to life in prison.
