Inspectors investigate throwing of firebomb

ELYRIA — A Molotov cocktail hurled at a Person Court porch sent two teenagers scrambling about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The quick-thinking girls grabbed handfuls of flour to smother the flames and to soak up a puddle of gas on their front steps, Elyria fire inspector Kurt Blair said.

Firefighters found a plastic beer bottle nearly disintegrated by the heat.

“This is a very serious situation,” Blair said.

A pocket of ignited fluid burned a hole in the side of the flimsy plastic, and the bulk of the liquid spilled onto the pavement, he said.
Inspectors could not identify the fluid Tuesday night.

The girls, who were home alone, were not hurt.

Neighbor James Baxter said the fire could be linked to a verbal altercation between some kids and some adults on the street the previous night.

That yelling match had been filled with profanity, but police had not become involved, he said.

“We’ve been having a lot of problems with kids,” Baxter said.
