The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present. Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Vasiliki "Bessie" Karas (nee Hatzidemetriou), 100, beloved wife of the late Steve Karas, died peacefully Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at Rosewood Skilled Nursing Center in Peabody, Mass.
She was born in Samos, Greece, the daughter of Dimitri and Katherine Hatzidemetriou. She lived in Greece until her marriage, moving to the United States in 1930.
She and her husband, Steve, settled in Elyria where he owned and operated a grocery store.
She was a communicant of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lorain.
She moved from Elyria to Peabody in 1985.
Bessie is survived by daughters, Katherine (John) Power of Westlake, Helen (John) Anezis of Peabody. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Maria (Robert) Gauvain, Vanessa Stolar, Stephanie (Joseph) Najjar, Steve (Jeanine) Anezis, Jennifer (Nathan) Gravelle; 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Steve, she was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters who lived in Greece.
Funeral services were Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at the Chapel of Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. The Rev. Michael Gulgas officiated.
Dicken Funeral Home, Elyria was in charge of arrangements.
