Frank Eugene Herrmann, 88, of Amherst, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Avon following a lengthy illness. He was born June 8, 1919 in Gresham. He was raised in Amherst and graduated in 1937 from Amherst Central High School. Frank was a lifetime resident of Amherst and resided in the home that he built himself.
Frank served as a Sea Bee in the United States Navy during World War II serving in the Pacific Theater where he received the Asian American Theater Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star, the Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
After the war, Frank was involved with establishing the hydroponics program in California. He was employed as a General Manager at the Lorain County Farm Bureau, (now the Town and Country Co-op) in Elyria for 46 years before retiring in 1983.
He was a Senior 4-H member and enjoyed beekeeping, hunting, fishing, gardening and tending to his vineyards.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen Mae Herrmann (nee Connell); sons, Douglas Herrmann and Gary Herrmann both of Findlay; daughters, Carol Schmitkons of Lorain, Cynthia Lichtle of Pandora, Joy Barckholtz of Friendswood, TX, Janet Goodreau of Medina; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Mildred Herrmann; and parents, Fred F. and Julia C. Herrmann (nee Ossmann).
Friends may call Sunday, October 14, 2007 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 15, 2007 at 10 A.M. with full military honors given by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard from the funeral home. Rev. Daniel Reinke, pastor of Old Stone United Methodist Church, Amherst, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
