Council delays donation

ELYRIA — City Council put off accepting a building donation from the Nordson Corporation Foundation until it can clear up concerns with the property agreement.
The ordinance authorizing the city to accept four parcels, and a more-than-22,500-square-foot-building along the 1800 block of Middle Avenue, was sent back to the Community Development Committee for more discussion, in part due to concerns that the agreement calls for the property to be used by the city solely for youth programming over a 10-year period.
Councilwoman Bonnie Ivancic, D-4th Ward, said the time frame was too long for a building that she describes as a large warehouse that needs work.
“Prudently speaking for the city, 10 years is a long time,” she said. “I can see five years, but I think (the building) needs a little tinkering before the city can be fiscally responsible in accepting this.”
Councilman Mike Lotko, D-at large, said the investment in the city’s south side was something council shouldn’t overlook.
“If we don’t invest in it, who’s going to?” he said.
