Man found shot in back

ELYRIA — A Lorain man was shot in the back early Sunday in the Westway Garden housing complex.
A resident from the 800 block of Allen Street called police after hearing two gunshots about 5:15 a.m., Elyria police Lt. Andy Eichenlaub said.

When police arrived, they found Antonio T. Ward, 24, lying on the grass outside 103 Melvyn Lane.
Ward was listed in critical condition Monday night at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, and is being kept sedated and unable to speak with police about what happened, Eichenlaub said.

Ward appears to have only been shot once, and evidence of a second gunshot was not found, Eichenlaub said.
Ward did not have any friends or family in the area who have come forward, and it is not clear what Ward was doing there.

Eichenlaub said residents saw a blue Ford Taurus leaving the area at high speed, but neither that vehicle nor its occupants have been located.

“We don’t have a lot to work with and that’s why we’re asking for anyone with information to come forward,” Eichenlaub said.

Court records show that Ward has a lengthy criminal record, which includes convictions for felony trafficking in cocaine, drug possession and has a case is pending in county Common Pleas Court for aggravated burglary and felonious assault charges.
