Part-time Wakeman officer awaits fate

WAKEMAN — A part-time Wakeman police officer may have to turn in his badge next month when he is sentenced for having sex in a park bathroom.

Dan Deusenberry, 35, of Strongsville, pleaded no contest to two counts of public indecency in Berea Municipal Court.

A third count was dismissed, according to court records.

Deusenberry was seen having sex with at least two men and masturbating at the Royalview Picnic Area in Strongsville’s Mill Stream Reservation on four occasions in March, June and July, according to a Cleveland Metroparks report.

Witnesses said they saw him wearing red G-string underwear and sticking his head out of bathroom stalls while performing the sex acts, the report said.

He was arrested on July 24 while driving near Mill Stream, and admitted to the charges when interviewed by Metropark rangers, the report said.

Wakeman Mayor Stanley Wolfe said Deusenberry has been on unpaid administrative leave since his arrest.

“It’s bizarre,” Wolfe said. “It’s quite shocking. I’ve known him for several years, and it’s just shocking to think he might have done this.”

After Deusenberry is sentenced Nov. 7, Wolfe will meet with Wakeman Police Chief Tim Hunker to learn whether he will be terminated.

Deusenberry has been on the force for about seven years, Wolfe said, and has an otherwise unblemished record.
Strongsville Youth Football Commissioner Mark Hopkins said Deusenberry has also been suspended from his volunteer role as an assistant coach.

The suspension was not a result of Deusenberry’s legal problems, however, Hopkins said.
Instead, Deusenberry failed to comply with league rules by refusing to have a background check done, he said.
