Chronicle staffers win journalism awards

Managing Editor Patti Ewald has been named Best Columnist in Ohio by the Society of Professional Journalists.

It was the second year in a row Ewald won the honor for her slice-of-life column that appears Mondays in The Chronicle’s Accent section.

Also given awards at the annual banquet Saturday in Columbus were reporters Brad Dicken and Cindy Leise and sports editor Kevin Aprile.

Dicken won a second place in Best Human Interest Reporting for “Slaying in Virginia: SEAL vs. SEAL.”

Leise won a second place for Best Deadline Reporting for “Rescuer dies in flood.”

Aprile tied for first place for Best Headline Writing for “The Big Queasy: New Orleans leaves Browns feeling sick after ugly opener.”
