Richard A. “Tubby” Smink, 76, of Elyria Township, died Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born December 28, 1930 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania and has been a resident of Elyria Twp. since 1959.
Mr. Smink was a stationary engineer for General Motors Fisher Guide, Elyria from 1976 to 1988, when he retired. He also worked as a carpenter for 14 years and worked in factory maintenance many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War.
Mr. Smink also served 15 years as a Volunteer Fireman with the Elyria Township Fire Dept., with two of those years as Chief of the Department.
He was a life member of American Legion Post 12, V.F.W. Post 1079, Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 71 and the 31st Infantry Regimen Association.
He enjoyed working in his garden and caring for flowers.
He is survived by wife of 52 years, L. Agnes (nee Matelsky); son, Christopher Smink of Pontotoc, Mississippi; and daughter, Kim Sanchez of Clearwater, Florida. Also surviving are three grandsons; two granddaughters; one great- granddaughter; and brother, John Smink of LaGrange.
He was preceded in death by parents, Benjamin D. and Edith M. (nee Greagor) Smink; brothers, Harold, Charles and Benjamin W.; and sister, Madelyn Hodge.
Visitation will be Monday from 11:30 A.M. until the time of a 2:30 P.M. Funeral Service at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. The American Legion Post 12 and Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 71 will conduct Services at the funeral home. Burial will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
