All-Ohio volleyball: Keystone’s Kincannon makes first team

Kari Kincannon’s focus never wavered this season and that paid off for the Keystone senior.
The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association made sure of that by naming Kincannon a first-team Division II All-Ohio selection.
“This honor makes feel really good and excited,” Kincannon said. “I knew that I had to be really focused for my senior season and go out and do my best.
“We played some very competitive teams, including Buckeye, Brookside and Wellington in Patriot Athletic Conference matches. We also played Midview, which always is a great match for us.
“I couldn’t have done as well as I did without coach (Dave) Cross. He’s been my coach since I played on a Junior Olympics team in the eighth grade. He is a motivator. He pushes me and my teammates to do as well as we can.”
Kincannon was the only area player to make first team in any division. In Division I, Amherst senior Courtney Jarvis was a second-team selection in Division I, while Olmsted Falls senior Julie Radigan was honorable mention.
Amherst coach Laurie Cogan was a recipient of the group’s coaches achievement awards for Division I. Cogan led the Comets to a berth in the regional championship match and a 24-3 record.
Kincannon is undecided about her future but definitely wants to play volleyball at the collegiate level. She’s applied to Lake Erie College and Notre Dame College in Ohio, along with St. Joseph College in Indiana. She’s considering a career in education.
“This is a really great honor for a great kid,” Cross said. “She has worked very hard and puts team first. There’s no sprinkle of ego in her.
“Kari constantly works to get better. She put volleyball as her No. 1 sport after her freshman season, giving up playing basketball in the winter season. She decided she loved volleyball and plays year-round.”
Kincannon suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Keystone’s next-to-last regular-season match at Buckeye. Her absence definitely hurt Keystone’s postseason hopes as the top-seeded Wildcats lost a Division II sectional championship match to Rocky River in three games.
Kincannon also credits her parents and older sister, Ashley, who also played for Keystone, for their support in making her the player she is today.
