Doctor pleads not guilty to groping

ELYRIA – An Elyria doctor accused of fondling his patients, an employee and a woman interviewing for a job in his office pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Thursday in county Common Pleas Court.
Somnath Roy, 42, of Avon, is charged with abduction, six counts of gross sexual imposition and seven counts of sexual imposition for incidents dating back to 2004.

Roy has denied wrongdoing and his attorney, Kenneth Lieux, has blamed the allegations against him on women who have accused the doctor of the sex charges to turn a profit. Two of the women, who are victims in the case, have filed lawsuits against Roy, demanding more than $1 million each. Roy continues to have an active medical license, according to the State Medical Board. Lieux has said his client intends to continue to practice despite the allegations against him.

The victims have told Elyria police and others that Roy used his position to place them in situations where he could fondle them, including under the guise of demonstrating breast exams. He also has been accused of rubbing his genitalia on a male patient.
