LORAIN – A 16-year-old boy who was hit by a minivan while crossing state Route 57 early Wednesday is in fair condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, according to a nursing supervisor.
Christian Nieves had injuries on his hip, knee and head after he was struck about 6:35 a.m. by a 1993 Plymouth Voyager on state Route 57 near East 42nd Street, according to a Lorain police report.
The driver, Peter Stanchak, 34, of Lorain, was driving home from work and traveling between 49 and 52 mph, the report said. Nieves was wearing dark clothing, and Stanchak said he did not see the boy until he hit the windshield, the report said.
Two witnesses who called 911 told police that Nieves was thrown down the road. An investigation revealed that Nieves had violated the city`s improper crossing law and should have used a nearby pedestrian bridge, the report said.
