Five hurt in two Saturday crashes

SHEFFIELD TWP. – A driver whose vehicle rear-ended another vehicle at midnight Saturday is in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, according to a nursing supervisor.

Miguel A. Sanchez, 21, of Lorain, drove his 1993 Honda Civic into the back of a 1997 Dodge Ram pickup on state Route 57 near North Ridge Road, said Dispatcher Kevin Koney of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The truck spun several times before veering into the median and striking two street signs, Trooper Charles Jackson said.

The driver, Hector Vazquez, 50, of Lorain, and his 13-year-old son were taken to EMH Emergency Care Center in Avon.

Personnel at the hospital would not release information Saturday about their conditions.

Sanchez`s Honda veered off the left side of the road and into a guardrail, Jackson said.

A passenger in the car, 18-year-old Adrienne Caraballo of Cleveland, was taken with Sanchez by helicopter to MetroHealth.

Caraballo was listed in fair condition Saturday night while Sanchez was critical, a nursing supervisor said.

Police officers from Elyria and Lorain were meeting at state Routes 57 and 254 to exchange paperwork and witnessed the crash, Jackson said.

The investigation indicates that Sanchez may have been speeding when the accident occurred, but no charges had been filed late Saturday.

Troopers also responded at 1:18 a.m. to a second crash involving two vehicles on Nickel-Plate Diagonal Road in Carlisle Township.

Koney said Danny D. Rector Jr., 19, of Elyria, rolled his 2004 Dodge four-door when he tried to pass a friend`s car.

Rector was transported to EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria, treated and released. He was charged with DUI, reckless operation and underage consumption.
