LORAIN – It`s been eight months since Lakeview Park was anything other than a construction site.
Once considered an oasis planted in the middle of Lorain`s urban landscape, Lakeview`s park benches and shady trees overlooking beautiful Lake Erie were replaced with stacks of wood and workers in hardhats while a much-needed renovation was taking place.
On Dec. 8, the beachfront retreat will be returned to residents with a dedication ceremony inside the newly built bathhouse.
The ceremony is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the formal dedication taking place at noon. The park is located on West Erie Avenue.
Guests can explore the park as staff from the Lorain County Metro Parks discusses the changes that took place. Built in the early 1900s, much of the park was in sore need of a makeover, which include a renovated boardwalk, walkways, bowling green, event garden, rose garden and two new amphitheaters.
Lorain County Metro Parks raised nearly $1 million for the project, which will also includes renovation of the park fountain next year.
“It`s amazing, just amazing,” said Dan Martin, director of the Metro Parks. “It`s going to be absolutely beautiful.”
Tours of the bathhouse will take place all day long, giving visitors their first chance to see the Rose Café, which can be rented for private parties and which includes a program area on the upper floor, eight family changing rooms and a concession stand on the lower level that will be open during the summer.
The original bathhouse was destroyed by a 1924 tornado.
