Jean Irene Shaffer (nee McCullen), 85, born May 12, 1922 in Cleveland. She lived most of her life in Elyria. Though stricken by polio at a young age, Mrs. Shaffer lived a full life. She belonged to the Elyria Y-Echos group (for the handicapped) from 1955 to 1978 where she learned many craft skills, the Jolly 60′s Social Club of Elyria from 1982 to 1996 where she enjoyed many motorcoach tours, and the Elyria Eagles Club Ladies Auxiliary where she much enjoyed being a long time member (Since October 1961) and attending many club functions.
Mrs. Shaffer is survived by four nephews and several great nieces and nephews who reside in Florida; one niece who resides in California; cousins in Norwalk and Toledo; as well as many friends in Northern Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Florida.
Mrs. Shaffer was preceded in death in 1990 by her beloved husband of 24 years, Clyde O. Shaffer; her parents, Raymond T. and Eva (nee Weishahn) McCullen; step mother, Elsie McCullen; brothers, Raymond “Red” McCullen of Elyria and Edward J. McCullen of California; and several aunts and an uncle.
Friends may call from 12 to 1 P.M. Saturday, November 24, 2007, in the Fr. Joseph Weigand Room at St. Mary’s Church.Â A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 1 P.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 320 Middle Ave, Elyria. Father Charles Diedrick, Pastor of St. Mary’s Church, will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery on Lake Ave. in Elyria. Arrangements are being handled by The Bauer-Laubenthal Funeral Home at Chestnut Ridge Rd. and State Rt. 57 Elyria.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Church of Elyria, the American Cancer Society, or the American Lung Association.
