The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present. Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Bernice O. “Bern” James, 83, of Lorain, passed away Saturday, November, 24, 2007 in the Community Health Partners of Lorain, following a brief illness. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, coming to Lorain 50 years ago.
She was employed as a clerk for the Gaylord Giant Tigers Department Store in Lorain.
A member of Greater St. Matthew’s AME Church of Lorain, she served as President of the Stewardess Board, and was a Senior Choir member, where she enjoyed singing.
She will be sadly missed by her children, Darlene Lighty and Robert (Bobby) Brown, both of Lorain; brother, Richard McGhee of Chicago, Illinois; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ned James; sisters, Minnie Pledger and Doris Royster; and brother, Don McGhee Jr.
Friends may call Tuesday, November 27, 2007, from 11 A.M. until the time of Service at 12 P.M. in the Greater St. Matthew Church, 1909 W. 24th Street, Lorain, where the Rev. Arnett Thornton, Pastor of Community AME Church, Cleveland, will officiate Services. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Cemetery, Lorain. Carter Funeral Homes is in charge of funeral arrangements.
