Cars crash into building; infant injured

ELYRIA – A midafternoon crash Monday sent two cars spinning into a building and three people to the hospital, including a 2-month-old girl.

Police responded at 2:44 p.m. to the former hobbies and craft store the Slot Shop on Cleveland Street after a car driven by Irene Pastor, 89, of Elyria, collided with a westbound vehicle.

Pastor told Elyria police she was trying to pull out of a private drive along Cleveland Street when her foot slipped off the vehicle`s brake and landed on the gas pedal.

When her 1998 Dodge Stratus picked up speed, it collided with the driver`s side of a vehicle driven by Kathleen Herschler, 21, of North Ridgeville, and sent both vehicles spinning into the front of the former Slot Shop, breaking its storefront window.

Pastor and the 2-month-old in her car were transported to EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria for treatment. They later were released, according to hospital spokeswoman Kristen Davis.

Herschler was the only occupant in the other vehicle. She also was treated and released.

Pastor was charged with failure to obtain reasonable control.
