The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present. Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Henry William Schmitz, 83, died Monday, November 26, 2007 at Welcome Nursing Home after a short illness. He was born February 29, 1924 in Oberlin, where he had lived most of his life. He graduated from Oberlin High School in 1942.
He worked for Thew Shovel in Elyria for 32 years and then worked for Nordson, retiring in 1990. He was also a grain and dairy farmer.
He served in the U.S. Army during WW II as a Staff Sgt. and Medic. Henry was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Oberlin, Oberlin Farmers Grange and the Ohio State Farmers Grange, Lorain County Pomona Grange, and V.F.W. #1662 of Amherst.
He enjoyed gardening, raising sunflowers and pumpkins and spending time with his family.
He is survived by daughters, Marie Shullick of Grafton, Frances Loflin of Greensburg, Pennsylvania; a son, Henry Nicholas Schmitz of Oberlin; sisters, Beatrice Bucholz of Wellington and Lois Wohlever Jackson of Oberlin; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife to whom he was married 52 years, Ernestine Marie Schmitz; father, Henry I. Schmitz; mother, Margaret Youngless Schmitz; granddaughter, Pamela Shullick Coleff; sisters, Dorothy Kreutzer and Margaret J. Tingler; brother, Joseph Schmitz.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at the Cowling Funeral Home, Oberlin. The Funeral Mass will be at 10 A.M , Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oberlin. Father William B. Padavick will officiate. Burial will be at Westwood Cemetery, Oberlin.
