Prep football: Elyria Catholic’s Schuster makes first-team All-Ohio

Elyria Catholic quarterback Cody Schuster definitely wanted to make his senior football season one to remember.
Being named first-team
All-Ohio in Division IV certainly qualifies.
“This is a really great honor for me,” Schuster said. “I couldn`t have done it without some great teammates. Our linemen gave me some great protection. We made some great plays and our skill position players did what they had to do.”
Schuster, who was a special mention pick last year, passed for more than 2,500 yards this season and added almost 600 yards rushing. He accounted for 27 touchdowns, 22 passing and five rushing, as he led the Panthers to an 8-3 record and a spot in the state playoffs.
Two of his favorite receiving targets were his twin brother Jacob and Richie Baker. Baker was named to this year`s special mention list.
While Schuster says he`s uncertain about his future plans, he said he doesn`t want to hang up the cleats just yet.
“I`ve been looking at some Division III schools,” said Schuster, who`s considering a career in sports management. “If something bigger comes up, I`ll consider that. I`m keeping my options open at the present time.”
Elyria Catholic coach Ben Malbasa was thrilled to hear Schuster made all-state.
“This is awesome news for a great young man and his family,” Malbasa said.
“They`re an incredible family and I know that they`re excited for Cody.”
Malbasa said there were some things that set Schuster apart from others.
“Cody is a unique individual,” Malbasa said. “He`s got physical and mental toughness to go along with his statistics. But a real reason that he has received several honors is that he can take a hit and get up and run the next play without thinking about the previous play. He`s shown this time after time. He has earned a lot of respect for this, not only from his peers, but also from others who have seen him play.
“Cody may be an all-state quarterback but in many ways this is a team honor. That includes his twin, Jacob, and Richie Baker. Richie probably is the best receiver that I have seen as a coach for about 10 years. I`m extremely proud of our whole team. They`re what make this award possible.
“Cody also benefited from having Dave McFarland as his coach for his first three years of high school football. Dave was a quarterback for the Panthers and got Cody ready to do it all as his senior season began.”
Wellington senior punter Cory Kidd was named to the Division IV second team, while Shane Robinson and Kyle Shaw of Keystone, Kull McClurg and Michael Gray of Wellington, Antwaun Carlton and William Payne of Clearview and David Zgodzinski of Brookside all made special mention.
Two area players – Kyle Gregory of Avon and Jack LaForce of Vermilion – were named to Division III special mention list.
