Boys basketball: Vermilion’s fast start slows down Wellington

VERMILION – If Kurt Habermehl has some magic in his pregame pep talks, he might find a lucrative market among his fellow coaches.
For sure Tom Eibel would be among them.
Both Vermilion`s Habermehl and Wellington`s Eibel felt that a quick start would be a key to Friday night`s non-conference basketball game.
It was.
Vermilion (2-0) hit its first four shots and seven of 10 to open up a 22-10 first quarter lead while Wellington (1-1) struggled, making only one of its first six.
That set the tempo in a 73-46 Vermlion victory.
“We challenged the kids to come out and set the tempo,” Habermehl said. “One of the things I`m happiest about was the way we got the ball to the wings and got out on the fast break for easy layups. Wellington only plays seven guys and we thought we could wear them down a little.”
The slow start doomed the Dukes.
“We needed to get off to a good start to get our confidence up, so we could compete,” Eibel said. “When we beat their pressure, we couldn`t finish and it was uphill all night.”
It showed in the numbers. Vermilion sank 60 percent of its shots – 50 percent from 3-point range – and dominated the glass, 32-13, holding Wellington to just three offensive rebounds, none in the second half.
“Vermilion is a nice basketball team – big, strong and deep,” said Eibel. “They`re the best we`ve seen this year and actually for two years. They`re better than they were last year.”
Vermilion was too tough inside with 6-7 Derek Hoebing and 6-5 Matt Liljegren. Hoebing had 15 points and Liljegren had 10 rebounds plus a number of steals and assists.
