Elyria man faces rape charges

ELYRIA – Police say a man raped a woman at knifepoint early Monday and wouldn`t let her leave his East Avenue apartment until officers barged in.

Tarrant

David Tarrant, 24, of Elyria, was charged with rape, kidnapping and felonious assault and was taken to the county jail on $55,000 bond.

Officers were called at 2:51 a.m. to an apartment on the 300 block of East Avenue to investigate suspicious sounds, Elyria police Capt. Dan Jaykel said.

They found the area quiet and no one would answer the door, he said.

When neighbors reported a woman screaming at 3:05 a.m., the officers returned and were able to coax Tarrant to the door, Jaykel said.

Inside, they found a 40-year-old woman, he said. She told police Tarrant had held her captive with a steak knife and forced her to perform sex acts.

Jaykel said the woman had been visiting someone else in the apartment building but agreed willingly to go to Tarrant`s residence.

She was taken to EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria for a cut over her right eyebrow. Jaykel said she refused treatment.

Tarrant did not enter a plea at his arraignment Tuesday in Elyria Municipal Court.
