Weekend crashes keep authorities busy

A weekend of fender benders continued Sunday with a two-car crash on state Route 82 that sent four people to the hospital.

It happened about 6 p.m. Sunday near the Circle K convenience store. That`s when the Elyria Post of the State Highway Patrol reports that 56-year-old Patricia A. McClain of Columbia Station failed to stop her vehicle before rear-ending 54-year-old Charlotte Whitt of Grafton.

The impact damaged both cars and resulted in both McClain and Whitt being taken to the emergency room at EMH Regional Medical Center for treatment. Whitt`s two passengers, 76-year-old Ruby Meade and 79-year-old James Meade, both of Grafton, also were taken to EMH for treatment.

While McClain was cited at the scene for assured clear distance ahead, the crash remains under investigation, the patrol reported. The patrol is looking at several factors, including whether wet roads contributed to the crash, which was one of nearly a dozen that the patrol responded to Saturday and Sunday in the county.

Today may be just as busy for law enforcement and rescue workers as rain is expected to turn to snow by rush hour, according to weather forecasts. Snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is expected in some areas.
