John W. Gillespie, 72, and a resident of Lorain, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at The Cleveland Clinic following a brief illness.
He was born January 26, 1935 in Glasgow, Scotland. John came to the United States in 1948. He had made his home in Lorain for the last 59 years.
John served in the Army. He was self-employed at Steel Tire & Ohio Contract Service as a Firestone distributor beforeÂ retiring in 2002.
He was a member of the Black River Lodge 786,Â F. & A.M., John was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge, a member of the Al Koran Shrine.
He was a life member of the VFW Post 451 in Lorain and a member of the Eagles in Daytona Beach Shores, Fla.
John played baseball in the Army for the Toul-Nancy Dodgers in Toul-Nancy, France, where he was stationed. John enjoyed spending time at his second home in Florida with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Ann Ducar; sons, William M. Gillespie of Lorain and John R. Gillespie of Independence; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Y. and Elizabeth Gillespie (nee Miller).
Friends may call 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, December 9, 2007, at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst.Â Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 10, 2007, at the funeral home. The Rev. James Smucker, pastor of Heritage Presbyterian Church, will officiate.Â Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
