WHEN: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today
WHERE: College Center at Lorain County Community College
As the only video game to make it on the Toys ‘R` Us Hot Toy List this year, the popularity of the game is evident in the more than 1.4 million copies that have sold since its release in late October.
Anita Frazier, an entertainment industry analyst for the NPD Group, said she didn`t anticipate the popularity of the game to top off anytime soon.
“Guitar Hero has certainly established itself among the elite video games properties,” she said. “Very few games sell in excess of 1 million units in their first month in market, but Guitar Hero 3 did easily with combined sales of 1.4 million units in only six days.
“Since it has broad appeal, it`s also the type of game that should continue to do very well throughout the holidays.”
The game is available on video game platforms PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, XBox 360 and Nintendo Wii, and transforms regular guitar novices into reputable rock icons by allowing them to press color-coded buttons in accordance with the colored notes that appear on screen.
Scores are tallied, but if too many errors are committed, the game ends and the crowd will boo.
The game includes rock classics from Cream and the Rolling Stones, as well as newer tunes from bands such as Killers and AFI.
The tournament is a first for the college`s Anime Society, a student club devoted to Japanese animated films, and will help offset the club`s upcoming “Shinbokucon” convention, which will feature live action role playing and video games.
