OBERLIN – An 18-year-old Oberlin teen is accused of beating and robbing a 19-year-old Carlisle Township man after the older teen gave a woman a ride to Oberlin early Saturday.
Rodney Cannon, a student at the Lorain County Joint Vocational School, was arrested at the school in connection with the robbery, which occurred early Saturday, Oberlin police Capt. Clif Barnes said.
Cannon faces a felony robbery charge along with misdemeanor assault and theft charges. He was being held at the county jail on a $16,000 bond.
The Carlisle Township man reported the incident to police Tuesday.
He was at a party when a woman asked him for a ride about 1 a.m. to Oberlin to visit her ex-boyfriend. She used his cell phone during the ride, and he discovered he did not have the phone after he dropped her at East Lorain and North Pleasant streets, according to the report.
The man returned to the location and said he wanted the phone back, saying it was “not a big deal,” according to the report.
The report stated the woman was with three men and one of the men yelled, “You`re turning this into a big deal” and began punching him through the car window.
He told police he got out and all three men attacked him. One of them asked for his money, and he turned over three $20 bills. Another man got in the car and attempted to remove the CD player but was unsuccessful, according to the report.
The victim did not initially report the incident because he did not think police would have enough to go on. Barnes said police are still looking for the other men.
