Three sent to hospital after wreck

ELYRIA — A four-car pile-up at 6:31 p.m. Friday on state Route 57 sent three people to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Dispatcher Jennifer Smolka said the chain reaction crash shut down the northbound side of the highway for about 35 minutes, and traffic was reduced to one lane for about another half hour.

Harrison Jones, 59, of Oberlin, slammed into the back of a car driven by Brian Jaram of Amherst, knocking it to the side of the road near the Griswold Road exit at Midway Mall, Smolka said.

A third car driven by Luis Otero, 43, of Lorain, couldn’t brake in time, and another driven by Leanne Karnik, 32, of Amherst, also became tangled in the wreck, she said.

Jones and his passenger, who was not named in the patrol’s preliminary report, were treated at Allen Community Hospital in Oberlin and released. Karnik was taken to EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria for leg wounds and released.

Jones, Otero and Karnik were all charged with failing to maintain an assured clear distance.
