Santa to take children’s calls on live TV

AMHERST — Children in Amherst are in for a treat this Wednesday, as the man of the hour — the one and only Santa Claus — makes a rare appearance at Amherst City Cable studios.

Children are encouraged to call in, with their parent’s permission, for a one-on-one conversation with the jolly man himself.

Santa will answer children’s phone calls Wednesday on a live broadcast on Amherst City Cable.

Calls will be broadcast live on the air.

“I can’t wait to talk to all of the good little girls and boys of Amherst this year,” Santa said. “Last year, we had such a terrific response, and I was on the air for more than two hours.”

The station requests that before calling, children know what they want to say to Santa so that there is enough time for everyone to get a chance to chat.

Jennifer Clark, 35, of Amherst, said that her children loved the program last year.

“It really keeps up the spirit of Santa Claus and the holiday. It’s such a thoughtful program. The kids ask about it all year,” Clark said.

Amherst City Cable, which started the program many years ago, just reinstated it last year. Manager Mike Leuszler said that the program returned when management changed hands.

“We plan on continuing the program each holiday for as long as it is successful,” he said. “We’re glad to be back, and the great response last year has us excited to do it again this year.”

This year, children can e-mail Santa, as well.

“Many of the e-mails will be read live on the air, and this lets us give more communication to Santa from the kids who didn’t want to call in,” Leuszler said.

The program will begin 7 p.m. Wednesday on local channel 98 in Amherst. Reruns of the taping will be run throughout the week.
