The $500 million quarry project on the county`s west side will have a focus on nature and outdoor activities and eventually include about 1,000 homes ranging in price from $750,000 to $1.3 million, the developer and county officials announced today.
The quarry, which is being developed by the Los Angeles-based Industrial Reality Group, also will include amenities such as an equestrian center, hiking trails, rock climbing, boating, cross country skiing and other outdoor activities.
The project, which will be built largely in South Amherst and Amherst Township, is expected to be completed in the next seven to 10 years. At least some of the development will be open to the public, but much of it will be private and accessible only to residents.
The county estimates that the project will generate between 1,000 and 2,000 construction jobs while it is being built and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity.
County officials hope to begin building a $26 million sewer that will run from a waste water treatment plant on Lorain`s west side to the development in the spring and have promised IRG that it will be completed in two years.
The developer plans to begin pre-selling homes this spring as well.

Like the Emporers New Clothes, I can’t see it. What I do see is some very large holes in the ground that carrie high-risk liabilty factors, that will eventually be “donated” to Metro Parks or some other greenspace cause for a very favorable tax write-off. I see very expensive infrostructure costs for sewage, water, drainage and electrical, because of the reason those quarries were dug there, if you dig down 6-12 inches you hit solid sandstone. For this same reason I don’t see many basement-less, slab homes in the million dollar range either; and come on 1,000 - 2,000 construction jobs? They didn’t have that many construction jobs when they built the Ford Plant.
What I do see is a means to an end to get sewer lines closer to the L.C. (”Lost Cause”) Regional Airport; and more county tax money being waisted.

AMEN RICK, couldn’t have said it better, but, may I add some insight. Boy, besides the commissioners chomping at the bit on this, is ANYONE else? Hey, lets BLOW $26 MILLION for a sewer for nothing. But as said, another way to get it out to that airport, look at all the 1000’s of jobs thats brought, new hangers, new runways, new fence, new lights, drainage canal, WOW! And now, 1000’s of jobs WILL be created because someone has a vision…HOGWASH!! Guess what the cost over run will be on that sewer, blasting through sandstone, buying people out, forced easements etc. All the while,we can’t have deputy protection for our townships. C’mon, 750,000 - 1.3 million dollar houses???? With NO basements. But hey, their going to start taking downpayments, there are probably 1000’s lined up for that too!! And wow, rock climbing (cascade) boating (lake Erie) x-country sking (anywhere) Is any of this making sense??

These various large scale developments being proposed in Amherst Twp. and South Amherst may literally have the residents of the City of Lorain grasping at straws as they drown in a torrent of raw sewage, and storm water.

There is quite a difference in elevations between Amherst Twp. and the City of Lorain. Someone should explain to our politicians that water and sewage flow downhill—and Lorain is downhill.

I don’t see how the County Commissioners and other local politicains can expect the local taxpayers to pay for Stewart Lichter’s restricted development—and all of the infrastructer(roads, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, etc.) & public services (police, fire, etc.) it will demand.

This project also takes the focus off of the development of the natural beauty of the lake front & Port of Lorain, and diverts attention toward the obscure & trivial.

The least we should do is wait until we see what Stewart Lichter does with his property on, and near the lake front; before a ton of the taxpayer money is spent.

The people who buy and or can afford to buy these types of houses, where do they work? Where are they getting the funds to purchase these wastes of money as i call it!
I thought there was a foreclosure problem now!!
Or is it a property investment for the europeans is this going to be their second homes since the american dollar is worth only half of what the european pound and or euro is worth!! sound like a tax scam to me! Look at Avon boy did they really screw up that town!! And half of those homes will be empty before long!! There is hardly any types of recreational facilities around here for anyone unless you are rich enough to afford a boat!! Why cant they use the quarries for some thing that can profit the city plus allow everyone but the rich to enjoy!!!

Nothing personal against South Amherst, but they really don’t offer the cultural and social events that people in the high end housing market are typically drawn to. I ‘m not convinced there are hundreds of new homeowners clamoring to buy in South Amherst and willing to then drive all the way into Cleveland for their cultural ‘fix’.
And by the way - which mortgage lender is in line for the ‘exclusive’ on this deal???

Imagine how far $26 MIL. would go for schools, roads, SHeriffs, local sewers, etc. WHO is o.k.ing ALL this? This should all be put up to vote BY the citizens that pay taxes in this COUNTY, not decided by someone in California that has his own interests in this , not ours!! Let him FOOT THE BILL, then I think we’d welcome it. Gamble with his $$$ NOT ours!! Let HIS $500 Mil. gamble be HIS $526 Mil. Gamble!!!
