Elyria hold-ups at bank, Subway have striking similarities

ELYRIA — It looks like robbers are returning to their old haunts just in time to ruin the holidays for local businesses.

Elyria police officers were called to hold-ups Friday at National City Bank, 405 Midway Blvd., and on Saturday at Subway, 403 Cleveland St.

Both places already had been robbed once before this month under eerily similar circumstances and on the same date.

A bandit made off with about $14,000 just before midnight after flashing a gun at a Finish Line assistant manager making a deposit at National City, according to an Elyria police report.

Kurt Staller, 25, of Sheffield, told police that a black man, about 35 years old, took $12,029.23 in cash and $1,881 in checks and ran off.

The same thing happened Dec. 7 to a woman dropping a late-night deposit at the same bank, Elyria police Sgt. Richard Ellis said.

Subway could be dealing with a repeat robber, too. Workers there told police that a knife-wielding man barged in about 8:30 p.m. Saturday and took cash, Ellis said.

The sandwich shop was held up in the same exact way on Dec. 7.

The suspect in both Subway heists was described as a white male in his mid-20s with a beard and no mustache.
