ELYRIA — A Lorain man who was apparently trying to skirt the costs associated with mailing a package was charged with theft of packing tape and a Sharpie marker Saturday.
Employees at Drug Mart told police they spotted 38-year-old Thomas Welder enter the store with a large box and pick up a roll of packing tape from an aisle. Welder allegedly used some of the tape on his box then put the used tape back on the shelf.
Welder then grabbed the marker, wrote on the box and put the marker in his pocket before walking over to the courtesy counter to have the package mailed, according to a police report. He then exited the store without paying for the marker or the tape.
