George Vargo, Sr.

George Vargo, Sr., 83, of Lorain, died Thursday, December 27, 2007, at his residence following a brief illness. Mr. Vargo was born in Steubenville on August 7, 1924 and had been a resident of Lorain since 1945.

He was employed as a shipper at United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works, retiring in 1986 following 40 years of service with the steel producer.

Survivors include his sons, George Vargo, Junior of Lorain, and Terry "Whitey" Vargo of Amherst Township; step-son, John Adams of Vermilion; four grandchildren; two step- grandchildren; and sisters, Ellen Varney of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania and Margaret Shimko of Canton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes J. (nee Adams) Vargo in 2004; his parents, George and Susan (nee Novak) Vargo;  brother, Andy; and a sister, Susan Polochan.

Friends may call Sunday, December 30, 2007, from 4 to 7 P.M. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral Services will be Monday, December 31, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. in the funeral chapel with the Reverend Dr. Linwood H. Chamberlain, Jr., Co-Pastor of First Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township where military honors will be conducted by the officers and members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
