The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present.  Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Alfred A. Luther

Alfred A. Luther, 93, a lifelong resident of Elyria, died January 3, 2008 at Wesleyan Village in Elyria. He was born December 4, 1914 in Elyria, and was a 1932 graduate of Elyria High School.

Mr. Luther was a machinist working for the former Western Automatic Machine Screw Co. in Elyria, Elyria Manufacturing; and finally owned and operated Lasco Products, Inc. in Elyria, from 1960 to 1978 when he retired. During WWII, he was assigned to do machining work for the U.S. Military from within his own shop in Elyria.

He was a member of Lake Avenue United Church of Christ, Elyria, where he was active as deacon, trustee, usher and with the couple’s class. He also volunteered with the Meals-on-Wheels program through the Methodist Village.

He was a member of the Senior Fellowship in Elyria, a Mason with the Elyria Lodge #787 F. & A.M. and a Royal Arch Mason with Marshall Chapter #47.

Mr. Luther obtained his single engine private plane license and he and his son would fly their own Cessna plane during the 1970’s. He recently participated in the Second Wind Dreams Program at the Village, where he once again, was able to fly in a small plane.

He enjoyed bowling, golf and was an avid gardener.

He is survived by sons, J. Allen (Gloria) Luther of Grafton, Carl A. (Mary) Luther of Whitehall, Michigan and Lawrence F. (Susan) Luther of Wellington. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Alice Mae (nee Robinson) in 2003; sister, Harriett Busler in 1957; step-grandson, Erik Greene in 2007; great-grandson, Nathaniel Sarraino in 2003; and parents, Frank & Mary (nee Phipps) Luther.

Visitation will be Monday, January 7, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave. Elyria, where Elyria Lodge #787 will conduct a Masonic Lodge Service at 7 P.M. Monday evening. A Funeral Service will be 11 A.M. Tuesday, January 8, 2008 in the funeral home with the Reverend Bob Gross, Pastor of Lake Avenue United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
