AMHERST — A 36-year-old Cleveland man was killed early Sunday when he lost control of his vehicle on state Route 58 near the state Route 2 exit ramp in Amherst.
Francis P. Monaco was driving northbound about 3 a.m. when his black Pontiac Grand Prix rolled over into a southbound-facing Ford Explorer stopped at an intersection, according to Amherst police.
The Grand Prix came to rest on its side, and passenger Jennifer Merrell, 34, of Amherst, was able to exit the vehicle on her own. Merrell was wearing her seat belt and was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Monaco was not wearing his seat belt, police said.
The female driver of the Ford Explorer also was treated for minor injuries. Her name was unavailable.
A Lorain County Sheriff’s Deputy observed the Grand Prix traveling at an extremely high rate of speed prior to the crash, and alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the accident, according to Amherst police.
The accident remains under investigation.
