AVON LAKE – About 1,900 Ford workers got today off while mechanics try to fix an equipment malfunction at the Avon Lake Ford plant, UAW Local 200 President Tim Donovan said.

The afternoon shift is being instructed not to report at 4:30 p.m. as usual. Only 323 maintenance workers will have to show up, Donovan said.

“This isn’t a good day. We make money when we build vans,” he said.

The UAW contract with Ford includes 40 hours of “short week” time, so workers will still be paid, Donovan said. He’s hoping that a large machine in the body shop will be fixed by early Thursday, “but there’s always the possibility we still won’t be able to work tomorrow,” he said.
