WEATHER UPDATE — Closed schools to reopen tomorrow

Sorry, kids. School will reopen tomorrow.

Vermilion and Firelands Local schools were closed today due to freezing temperatures and high winds while Learwood Middle School and Eastview Elementary in Avon Lake were closed because of power outages.

Officials at all three school districts said they expect schools to be open Thursday barring a recurrence of this morning’s bitter weather conditions.
Showers and storms Tuesday night helped move 65 mph winds down to the surface and a cold front dropped temperatures from a 50 degree high Tuesday to the teens early this morning.

About 2,000 residents in Lorain County were without power because of the high winds and storms. Only about 70, scattered in pockets in Vermilion, Lorain and Elyria, remain without electricity.

“With winds blowing gusts as high as 65 mph, trees and limbs and other debris gets blown into our equipment,” said Mark Durbin, Ohio Edison spokesman. “We had to wait for tree crews to come in and remove the debris before we could get in there and fix it, but we got power on for peo-ple pretty fast.”

Durbin said customers should call a power outage hotline whenever there’s an outage so the company will know where the most problematic areas are. That number is 888-LIGHTSS.
