Girls basketball: Midview struggles from the start in loss to Fairview

EATON TWP. — Fairview delivered a roundhouse early that might not have knocked out Midview, but certainly left the Middies staggering.
Fairview kept its slim hopes for a West Shore Conference title alive with a 54-37 victory over the Middies on Wednesday. The Warriors scored 11 points in the first 1:30 and were in front 17-6 before the first quarter was over.
“We never recovered when we got down 11-2,” Midview coach Kim Kaufman said. “We’re a little disappointed. We were looking forward to this game.”
The Warriors stole the ball three times in the backcourt in a 34-second stretch and scored nine points in a row in 41 seconds to go ahead 11-2.
Midview (8-9, 6-6 WSC) never got closer than nine points after Megan Hardesty’s 3-pointer with 43 seconds left in the first that made it 20-8. Fairview (14-4, 10-2 WSC) all but finished off the Middies with an 11-0 run between the second and third periods that pushed the lead to 34-14.
“We wanted that tempo — upbeat, pressure,” Fairview coach Jessica Tafe said. “We weren’t deep enough to keep it up for 32 minutes, but we did it in spurts. We try to play defense as hard as we can for as long as we can.”
The Warriors entered the night two games behind first-place Rocky River in the WSC standings.
“Fairview isn’t 14-4 for no reason,” Kaufman added. “We couldn’t get in any flow. Even when we came back a little, Fairview knew how to make a big shot. We needed to get better spacing and take advantage of our big court.”
Midview managed to stage a couple of small rallies late. The Warriors were ahead 40-20 before the Middies scored seven unanswered points. Fairview answered with a 10-2 run to get the lead up to its biggest margin at 21 points.
The Middies scored eight straight points after that, thanks to some backcourt turnovers by the Warriors, but it was far too late for Midview to truly challenge for the lead.
Midview was 13-of-44 from the field and 10-of-14 at the free throw line. Fairview hit 20 of 49 from the field and missed only one of 13 free throw attempts.
Megan Snow scored nine of her team-leading 11 points in the second half for Midview.
