The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present.  Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Lawrence R. Groot, Jr.

Lawrence R. Groot, Jr., 58, of Amherst, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2008, at The Hospital for Orthopedic and Specialty Services Emergency Room in Amherst, following a heart attack.

He was born October 8, 1949 in Norwalk. He had been a resident of Amherst for the last 57 years.

He served with the U.S. Army.  Lawrence was employed as a semi-truck driver with Frayley Construction and Consumer Concrete for 19 years. He was a member of the Amherst Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie  #1442, the Amherst Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1662, and the Amherst American  Legion Post #118.  His hobbies included fishing and boating.

Survivors include his step-daughters, Terry Eishelman of  Amherst and Cindy Deushler of Sheffield; four step-grandchildren; his brother,  Richard Groot of Amherst; and his sisters; Sharon Groot and Linda Jamieson, both  of Amherst.

He was preceded in death by his wife of ten years, Suzanne  Groot (nee Damon) in 1996; and parents, Lawrence and Elizabeth Groot  (nee Szabo).

Friends may call Tuesday, February 5, 2008 from 3 to 8 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst.  Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. from the funeral home. The Amherst Veteran  Military Honor Guard will perform honors. The Rev. Fr. Lawrence Martello, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, will officiate. Burial will be in Crownhill Cemetery, Amherst.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the  charity of the donors choice.
