Car vs. Elyria Street Department truck

State Route 57 has reopened after being temporarily closed around 10 a.m. today because of an accident involving an Elyria Street Department truck that sent one person to the hospital.

The truck was parked between Gulf and West River roads directing traffic around a crew conducting pothole repairs when it was struck from behind by a driver who unsuccessfully tried to go around the truck, Elyria firefighters reported.

The sign on the back of the truck directed traffic into the left lane, but the driver of the car was forced to swerve to avoid being hit by another vehicle when he tried to make the maneuver and rear-ended the city truck.

The driver was taken to EMH Regional Medical Center by LifeCare with minor injuries. No city employees were injured in the accident.

The firefighters briefly closed the northbound lane of state Route 57 to clear the accident. A small amount of hydraulic fuel spilled on the roadway, but was quickly cleared away, firefighters reported.

The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
