It is with heavy hearts that the family of John Mitchell Grogan announce his sudden passing Monday, February 4, 2008 at the age of 73.
John was born in
John was a member of the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1969 having earned the rank of Captain.
Having a strong work ethic, John worked from his boyhood until the time of his death. John was an enthusiastic salesman throughout his career. He became a distributor with Safeguard Business Systems, Grafton, for 20 years until retiring in 2007. He continued to work a part-time sales position in the office furniture department at Staples,
John was an active member of the community, serving on the Board of Elections. He also belonged to the Friends of the Elyria Public Library, where he volunteered many years and served as President. John was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church Disciples of Christ,
Many people knew John for his contagious laugh and positive outlook on life. He enjoyed many hobbies and could be seen almost daily walking throughout Grafton. He piloted airplanes, sailed, created model planes, and was an avid reader. He was a devoted bird watcher and gardener, maintaining several feeders and taking special pride in his tomato plants. John was a proud
John loved spending time with family and friends. He spent many hours with his grandsons doing everything from fishing and vacationing to playing along with TV’s Millionaire. One of their greatest accomplishments as a team was the building of his sail boat, The Leakin Lindy. Papa John was their mentor and confidant.
John’s greatest joy was his wife, Linda, with whom he spent more than 26 years. They found great pleasure doing things together, including trips to flea markets, day trips to Kelley’s
John leaves behind many friends and family members, as he was loved by all that knew him. His legacy continues through the following individuals and their families, his wife of more than 25 years, Linda Lee (Peden); daughters, Carole M. Grogan of California, Kathleen M. Grogan of California, Carrie Lee Charlton (Clemmons-Grogan) (Pippa J. Sabin) of Elyria, and Sheri N. Clemmons of Elyria; grandsons, Steven M. Charlton, Tyler W. Charlton and Connor D. Murphy, all of Elyria; brother, Timothy Grogan (Pauline) of Vermilion; sister, Kathleen "Pud" Anguish (Tom) of Massachusetts; sisters-in-law, Cindy Alford (Peden) of South Carolina, and Karen Glassman (Peden) of Beachwood; in-laws, Leland and Narelle (Matcham) Peden of Elyria; great-aunt, Leona Pugel (Folley) of Elyria; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Clara (Wiatrowski) Grogan; sister, "Sis" Mary Claire Truax; and beloved cousin, Kenneth Grogan.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 11 A.M. at Washington Avenue Christian Church,
At John’s request, the family will be hosting an Irish Wake at his Grafton residence to celebrate his extraordinarily blessed life. The family would like to extend a warm welcome to anyone wishing to attend the gathering and to share a toast in his honor.
John’s willingness to give blood regularly and donate his organs resulted in the continued health of others.
Memorial contributions can be made in John’s name to the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Associations.
