It’s going to be bitter today, but at least kids in most public and private schools in the area won’t have to walk to school or wait for the bus.

Most area public and private schools canceled school.

Lorain County Community College was one of the last ones to cancel day classes. The college really tries to keep class in session when driving conditions are OK, said Marcia Ballinger, vice president of strategic and institutional development.

There will be no adult evening classes at the Lorain County Joint Vocational School.

Temperatures overnight were expected to drop as low as zero, according to meteorologist Bill Randel of the National Weather Service at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Wind chills of minus 10 to minus 20 degrees were expected, he said.

The high winds that blew through Sunday died down before the temperature dipped or it would have been even worse, Randel said.

Gusts at Cleveland Hopkins measured 49 mph Sunday and gusts at Lorain County Regional Airport measured 45 mph, he said.

Elyria Schools canceled class because of the forecasted wind chills and low temperatures, school spokeswoman Amy Kren said.

“We have a lot of students who walk to school, so the temperatures are dangerous,” she said.

Lorain Schools also canceled class, said Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson.

“I don’t want to have students out in temperatures like that,” she said.
