It was rough going in the storm

Tuesday’s snow/rain/ice storm took its toll on roads and drivers across the county.

Dozens of car accidents – mostly minor – were reported throughout the day – 27 to the Highway Patrol alone.

Emergency Management Director Tom Kelley said that black ice and the “bizarre” effect of wet roads in zero degree temperatures contributed to the high number of accidents.

Brian Stacey, of the Ohio Department of Transportation, said that cleaning and servicing the roads was a “real challenge.”

Both Tuesday and today ODOT had 12 crews plowing and salting the roads.

The slippery conditions also had local tow trucks pulling long shifts.

Dunlap’s Garage in Elyria towed 16 cars and trucks on Tuesday – more than twice as many as it averages, according to Lewis Dunlap.

The freezing rain also closed down Cleveland Hopkins airport for an hour Tuesday evening.

“We had rain that was freezing the minute it hit the pavement,” said airport spokesperson Pat Smith.
