TRAFFIC UPDATE — Crash closed Rt. 2 this morning

Westbound state Route 2 was closed for about an hour today after a two-car crash just east the Middle Ridge Road exit so a helicopter could land on the roadway to take an injured man to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

The man’s Ford Ranger pickup was eastbound at about 7:34 a.m. when it went across the median and struck a westbound Ford Taurus driven by a woman, said Lt. Glenn Peterson, commander of the Patrol’s Elyria Post. Both vehicles were going at least 65 mph, Peterson said.

She also was injured and was taken to CHP Regional Medical Center in Lorain. Names, ages and conditions were not immediately available.

It was cold so there’s a possibility the truck hit a patch of ice before jumping the median, Peterson said.

Westbound traffic was backed up past state Route 57 although some motorists were able to get off at that exit to avoid the mess, he said. Eastbound traffic was slow because of “rubberneckers,” he said.
