Teen cited for running red light after seven-car pileup on Rt. 57

ELYRIA — A 17-year-old girl who police say caused a seven-car crash Wednesday was cited for running a red light, police said.

Police said six people were taken to the hospital, all with minor injuries, after Melissa Mathews of Grafton traveled through a red light at state Route 57 and Cleveland Street.

Mathews’ Honda Accord  T-boned a Chevy Silverado carrying Oliver Branham, 30, of Vermilion, flipping the vehicle and sending the pick-up flying, which led to the other crashes, according to an Elyria police report.

“We’re all lucky to live through that crash,” Branham said Thursday. “I was wearing my seatbelt but it came undone, and I thought I was going to be thrown through the windshield.”

Branham said he’s bumped and bruised with pulled muscles and is under doctor’s orders to stay in bed.
