Motorists told to stay off roads as snow, ice blankets region

A wintery mix of icy rain and snow has road crews scrambling to keep the highways clear tonight.

“Everybody’s working at full capacity,” said Dispatcher Elizabeth Hyer of the Elyria post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Slick conditions sent a number of vehicles into ditches, but there were no serious accidents reported by 9 p.m., she said.

Meanwhile, traffic on Interstate 90 was traveling oh so slow in light of the conditions – going only about 25 mph.

At about 8 p.m., Cleveland police cautioned motorists to stay off the roads until salt trucks had made their rounds, Sgt. John Petranek said. He expected the warning to stay in effect for some time.

Several hours earlier, icy rain that turned to snow left dinner-time voters at Grace Lutheran Church scrambling to keep their footing as a steady stream of voters entered the polls. That scene was repeated elsewhere as well.
