PRIMARY 2008: Ballots collected by drivers on four-wheelers

With winter weather continuing to batter Lorain County tonight, the county Board of Elections has begun sending drivers in four-wheel-drive vehicles to collect ballots from polling places.

Marilyn Jacobcik, deputy director of the Board of Elections, said some poll workers also were driving the ballots to the board offices, where the results are being tabulated, but many polls workers were wary of the bad roads and were waiting for someone to pick up the ballots.

A poll worker at Washington Avenue Christian Church in Elyria said polls workers were told to wait for a driver to come to collect the ballots.

The elections board already had been braced for a delay in getting final results because of a mandate that paper optical scan ballots be made available to voters in addition to the county’s electronic voting system.
