Crews find constructive use for equipment during off-season

After storms as big as this last one, it might seem like there just aren’t enough plows.

That’s probably because there aren’t — and some firms need outside help to clear the snow.

Ridge Tool in Elyria, for example, had to call a construction company to get its lot clear of all the snow that fell.

And Steven Leiby, who owns Leiby Construction, said he got called on Saturday afternoon to help Ridge uncover itself after the storm.

He brought six other workers, two dump trucks and two backhoes, and it still took them all of Sunday to get the site cleared.

The workers and machinery, though, would otherwise be idle during construction’s slow season.

“It’s the only way to make a little extra money during winter,” Leiby said.
