Man leads police on chase down Broadway
LORAIN — A man allegedly threw a woman out of a moving van and led several Lorain police officers on a high-speed chase down Broadway on Saturday before being stunned twice by Tasers and then arrested, according to a police report.
When an officer approached a white minivan stopped at the intersection of West 17th Street and Broadway, Amber Stearns, 25, flagged him down and said the man in the minivan had thrown her out of the vehicle, the report stated.
After being told to shut off the van, Louis Santiago, 23, sped off south on Broadway, police said. Another patrol car began pursuing Santiago, who turned the minivan around on Broadway, allegedly ran several stop lights and accelerated to more than 80 mph, according to the report.
Santiago ended up at the site of the original stop where two officers were still talking to Stearns and “veered toward the officers and was trying to run the officers over,” according to the report. The officers had to dive over a snow bank to avoid being hit.
An officer threw road spikes under the minivan’s tires, which successfully stopped the van. Santiago jumped out of the van and ran before being tackled by an officer, according to the report. Several officers had to subdue the struggling Santiago and place him in the back of the police cruiser, the report stated.
After being handcuffed and placed in a cruiser, Santiago headbutted and broke the car’s window, and tried to crawl out. He was stunned by a Taser and returned to the cruiser.
Santiago resumed struggling and kicked at the opposite window. Officers again stunned him with a Taser and took him to Community Health Partners Regional Medical Center for treatment.
