Energy firms scout Lorain

Two companies that make parts for wind turbines visited a manufacturing site this week in Lorain County, according to the Ohio Department of Development.
“They are very promising wind prospects,” said agency spokeswoman Nikki Jaworski. “We`ve been very aggressive in courting wind power.”
The two companies looked at the same manufacturing site, which Jaworski declined to disclose. One visit occurred Monday and the other took place Wednesday.
The combination of skilled workers, the proximity of the Ohio Turnpike and rail and lake transportation makes Lorain County a very attractive place for manufacturing parts for wind turbines, which must be carefully engineered and crafted, Jaworski said.
Lorain Mayor Tony Krasienko, who met with representatives from the companies, said he could neither confirm nor deny the site is in Lorain.
He called the discussions “very, very preliminary,” but he expressed enthusiasm about the renewable energy industry.
“These companies are starting to see the state of Ohio is on the fast track for renewable energy,” Krasienko said.
The county commissioners, who also met with representatives of the companies, declined to release details and said they were not even given the names of the companies.
“We talked to a couple companies about manufacturing,” Commissioner Ted Kalo said. “At least they made a drive-by.”
Krasienko said the alternative energy business could be good for Lorain.
“It is the potential for huge sustainable employment,” he said.
