The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present.  Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Martin J. Matus

Martin J. Matus, 90, of Wakeman, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Amherst Manor in Amherst. He was born March 25, 1917, in California, Pa., and had lived in the Wakeman area most of his life.

He served in the Army during WWII in the 194th Glider Infantry. He served in the Rhineland, the Ardennes, and Central Europe. For his actions he received three Bronze Battle Stars, a Bronze Arrowhead, and a Combat Infantry Badge.  After the war he worked for Bendix in Elyria, where he retired as a foreman.

Marty loved raising raspberries and strawberries in his garden. He enjoyed watching sports, going to Army reunions, dancing and family functions.

He is survived by his sons, Gerald (Lin) Matus of Avon Lake, Lawrence (Claudia) Matus of Amherst; sister, Theresa Wukie of Grafton; brothers, Edward (Ethel), Robert (Germaine) and Paul (Eleanor “Skip”) Matus, all of Wakeman; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Garnet (Buer) in 2002; parents, Paul P. and Mary (Molchan) Matus; sisters, Irene Wohleber and Mary Leslie; and brother, Steve.

Friends may call on 2 to 4 and 7 to 9  p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2008, at Morman Funeral Home, 16 Cooper St., Wakeman, where a Scripture service will be at 8:30 p.m. There will be a 10 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home on Monday, March 17, 2008, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church on Main Street in Wakeman.

Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary’s Church Building Fund.
