The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present.  Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Max H. Jalowiec

Max H. Jalowiec, 89, of Elyria, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at his home. He was born April 7, 1918, in Elyria, where he had been a lifelong resident and graduated from Elyria High School in 1937.

He served as a corporal in the Marine Corps during WWII and was stationed on Guam and participated in the capture and occupation of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He was employed for 43 years as a prototype designer at Timms Spring Co. in Elyria, retiring in 1980.

He started caddying at Spring Valley Country Club at the age of nine, and in 1942, won the Spring Valley Golf Club Championship. In the 1950s, he won two Lorain County championships. He won the first Elyria American Legion Post 12 Gold Team Golf Tournament. He was a three-time medalist at the American Legion State Golf Tournament. During his golfing career, he had four holes-in-one.

He designed and was a former co-owner of Brentwood Golf Club and also designed and was a co-owner of Royal Oaks Golf Club, which opened in 1995.

He played fast pitch softball for the Vic Silvers Jewelers team, which won numerous city and county championships.

He also enjoyed bowling and had a career average of 190 and a high series of 667.

He was inducted into the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

In the 1960s, he was a member of The Midview Athletic Boosters Club, and with other members, helped construct the Midview High School Stadium.

He was a member of the Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Elyria and served on the committee to plan, raise money and build the present church.

He was a life member of Detachment 576 Marine Corps League, chartered by the United States Congress. He was a life member of Elyria Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1079 and a member of Elyria American Legion Post 12.

Max is survived by his wife of 22 years, Evelyn Resar (nee Pyecroft); daughters, Dawn (Larry) Rowe of Vero Beach, Fla.; Jane Lappi of Cordova, Tenn.; Bonnie (Jim) Mabrey of Daphne, Ala.; son, Max L. (Angie) Jalowiec of Elyria; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Bernice Pogan of Elyria; stepson, Jack (Karen) Resar of Grafton; stepdaughter, Sally (James) Walter of Wellington; seven step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 38 years, Hattie L. Jalowiec in 1982; brothers, Stephen and Theodore Jalowiec; sisters, Wanda Zaleski Morrison and Ola Suleski and a step-granddaughter.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2008, at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 523 E. Broad St., Elyria. The Reverend Karen Farthing will officiate.

Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, where the Marine Corps League Color Guard and Elyria VFW Post 1079 Honor Guard will conduct military services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pilgrim United Church of Christ, or Midview Athletic Boosters Club, 133 Bentley Dr., Elyria, OH 44035.
